The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), Division of Early Intervention and Special Education Services is pleased to announce that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved the application to renew Maryland’s Medicaid 1915(c) Home and Community-Based Services Waiver for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), commonly referred to as the Autism Waiver. This approval paves the way for a five-year continuation of home and community-based waiver services, effective July 1, 2019, for a minimum of 1,200 children with ASD.
Initiated in 2001, the Autism Waiver is a national model of collaboration between federal, State, and local health and education agencies. The MSDE is the Operating State Agency (OSA), and through partnership with the local school system, is responsible for the day-to-day implementation of the Autism Waiver. The Maryland Department of Health (MDH) is the single State Medicaid Agency (SMA) charged with the administration of Maryland’s Medicaid program and oversight of the Autism Waiver.
